The effect of karela (Momordica charantia) was observed on glucose and insulin concentrations in nine non-insulin-dependent diabetes patients and six non-diabetic laboratory rats. Results indicated that juice of karela significantly reduced blood glucose concentrations during a 50 g oral glucose tolerance test in the patients with diabetes and the rats that were fed same.

It was also noted that common delicacy the fried karela preparation eaten daily also showed a small but significant improvement in glucose tolerance. The researchers claimed that this improvement in glucose tolerance was not associated with an increase in serum insulin responses. The study clearly indicated that karela juice is good supplemental antidote as it improves glucose tolerance in diabetes.
