For diabetics, having too much glucose in their blood over a long period of time can cause some serious foot complications. There are two main types of this problem and each can have serious complications.

Diabetic Neuropathy:

Over time, diabetes can damage nerves, which makes it hard for people with diabetes to feel sensations in their extremities.

The condition also makes it difficult for a person to feel any irritation on their foot or notice when their shoes are rubbing. This lack of sensation and awareness can lead to an increase in the risk of cuts, sores, and blisters developing.

Peripheral Vascular Disease:

Diabetes leads to changes in your blood vessels, including the arteries. In this type of complication, the fatty deposits block vessels beyond the brain and heart.

It tends to affect the blood vessels leading to reduced blood flow to the hands and feet. This reduced flow can lead to pain, infection, and slow healing wounds. Severe infections can in some cases lead to amputation.

Proper foot care can help prevent common foot problems and help treat them before they cause serious complications. Here are some tips for good foot care:

  1. Follow your health care provider’s advice regarding nutrition, exercise, and medication. Keep your blood sugar levels in check and as recommended by your doctor.
  2. Wash your feet in warm water daily and only use mild soap. Do not soak your feet and always dry them, especially between the toes.
  3. Check your feet daily for sores, blisters, redness, or any other problems.
  4. If feet feel dry, keep them moist by applying lotion after you wash and dry your feet. Make sure not to put lotion between your toes.
