Diabetes educators and specialists advocate the need for specialized foot care if you have diabetes. Chronic high blood glucose levels eventually weaken the blood vessels and decrease the flow of blood to the legs and feet. In this case, foot care for diabetics becomes imperative.

As the circulation to the extremities is affected, nourishment and oxygen deprivation to the feet and toes weaken the skin, causing loss of sensation of heat, cold, and pain. This causes the formation of blisters or delayed healing of cuts and wounds and also increases the chances of ulcers as well as serious infections that may lead to gangrene.

Diabetes educators recommend taking good care of your feet in case you have type 2 or type 1 diabetes. As a part of the recommended advice, emphasis is given on wearing special socks for diabetes.

The best diabetic socks are the ones made from cotton fabric as it breathes. Ventilation in socks allows sweat absorption and reduces odor and itching of feet. Moreover, good fabric on the soles of the socks can prevent slipping on the floor. Uncomfortable friction on the skin of the feet can be avoided with a good choice of socks, known as diabetic socks.

Routine Foot Care For Diabetics

  • Daily Feet Hygiene- It is recommended to wash the feet using lukewarm water and mild soap to cleanse the feet daily. Gently dry your feet by patting them with a clean towel and moisturize using lotion cream or coconut oil.
  • Check Skin Surface- Examine the feet for skin tears, cracks or blisters, swelling, rash, and eczema all around the foot as well as between the toes.  Use a mirror to look at your soles for areas that you can’t otherwise see.
  • Walk In Comfortable Footwear- Snug and soft shoes that prevent blisters and fall are important. Ventilation is very important in your choice of footwear to avoid fungal infections.
  • Keep Toenails Trimmed- It is advised to trim your toenails straight across the toe and using an emery board file the nails without cutting the cuticles.
  • Get Routine Foot Exams- It is important to get screening for feet during routine diabetes care checks annually. You can also opt for a diabetic neuropathy test, also known as diabetic foot exam. Consult and get treatment for boils, cuts, wounds and blisters without delay and follow prescriptions accordingly.
